Braces Insurance - Does Dental Insurance Cover Orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry which treats patients for problems like misaligned teeth, over bite, under bite, over crowding of teeth, too much gap between teeth and so on. Usually braces are used to correct these problems. All dentists are qualified to fix standard braces on patients. Braces treatment cost a lot of money. How much of the treatment related costs does braces insurance cover?
Parents with young kids having orthodontic problems that need braces, young adults and older people who put off treatment unable to meet costs or because they did not want to sport a metallic smile are the various categories of people who are seeking braces insurance in order to meet at least a part of their costs. Dental insurance will not cover all kinds of treatment. It usually covers routine dental cleanings, x-rays, dental cavity fillings, crowns, and root canal procedures and braces installation. If you have some pre-existing conditions then your might not cover your treatment costs. So, check with your insurance providers on this.
If you are going for braces treatment either for yourself or your kids first check out your dental insurance terms and conditions. Many dental insurance plans limit your choice of dentist. You are expected to pick a dentist from their list of approved providers. This kind of closed panel dental insurance restricts our ability to get treatment from a dentist of our choice. Also, the terms of the plan in Illinois may differ from those in Pa. Read through your dental insurance documents to know what procedures are covered, what percentage is paid for and the annual limits. If there is annual limit on payout then your talk with your dentist and spread your payments over the treatment period, which is about 2 years for most people. If there is limit on the braces treatment itself then get the braces that are most effective and yet cheap like stainless steel braces which are mass produced and hence are quite cost effective.
If you opt for cosmetically more appealing appliances like invisible braces trade name Invisalign or iBraces, which are, placed behind your teeth or tooth-colored ceramic braces or clear braces insurance covers lesser percentage of the treatment charges in comparison to standard braces. Also, these braces are more expensive and also take more time to install and treat for the dentist. Some braces placement requires dentists who are specially trained for it like lingual braces. So, expect to pay more for these types of braces out of pocket.
Any insurance be it dental or health insurance will not cover you for cosmetic procedures or cosmetic braces. It does not meet their criteria of treatment that is usual, customary and reasonable. Some insurance providers might consider braces purely cosmetic and only percent of it may be covered and paid out for. However if the problems are severe enough and have potential to affect oral health in later life than the insurance company may cover a larger portion of the costs. Usually, braces insurance providers look at patients going in for orthodontic treatment on a case-by-case basis and decide on the maximum payouts they are eligible for.
